(an update from James’ sister, Angela)
I had the pleasure of spending the day with James today, Monday, December 23 at Prince County Hospital. He was much more alert and able to converse with us. His face had some colour in it. He did not sleep as much as he had been doing in previous days.
I discovered that James has a love for ice cream, a not uncommon love with many members of my family. This preferred food choice has taken on a health measurement for me. If I can get him to eat it, I know that he is ok. He ate a bit of ice cream today.
When speaking with his nurse and the two doctors that provide care to him, the question James needed an answer to is: “when can I go home?” This answer is what he is living for. Everyday he has asked this question. Finally, this afternoon, his cancer doctor stated that he felt James may be able to come home on Christmas day for a few hours. The answer he has wanted to hear, thus giving him a sense of purpose to endure the pain.
We have experienced some amazing moments with James. Cancer has given us a chance to let James know how much he is loved and to say good bye. Now, we are continuing to be blessed, by the news that he may be able to experience a final wish, Christmas with family, a blessed Christmas indeed.

Just to add my voice to the chorus of the grateful to the Profit family for their faithfulness and constancy in keeping all of us who are so far away updated and feeling close to all that is happening there with Jim (James). It is very consoling to know he is in your constant care and not alone in this struggle.
We in Guelph and Ontario have just been through an ice storm. Thick ice is still coating nearly everything, disabling power lines and downing trees. The cleanup and repairs are underway, but much of the ice remains.
Tonight as I was driving west out of Guelph to work, the late day sun was low in the sky, bright and backlighting and illuminating all the glassy tree branches. It was gorgeous and breath-taking. And the scene came to mind — such beauty in the midst of danger and difficulty — as I read these updates, of your setbacks and and rallies over these days, Jim, of your great unquenchable spirit. Peace and love. Greta

Dear Angela,
Thank you so much for the good news that Jim is feeling better today and that he will be able to go home for Christmas Day. Keep your positive and fighting attitude, Jim. It will bring you through these rough days and help you to be able to enter into the beauty of this Christmas season when God our creator sent his son as a further communication of his great love for us.
I am delighted, Jim, that you are eating some ice cream. I too am a lover of ice cream especially caramel and butterscotch. I’m looking forward to a dish after Mass this evening. You will be my main intention at Mass this Christmas night. I bet love of ice cream goes back to your MacKinnon heritage because quite a few members of my family also love it. Some of your fighting spirit comes from there as well so keep it up. We’re with you. The people who follow the Bruno Groaning healing circles believe that today and tomorrow are special days of renewed energy and healing and you are on their prayer list. They are well aware that it is Christ who does the healing. Let the good energy flow.and we’ll keep praying for you as you enjoy Christmas surrounded by the love of your family.
Love to you.

Dear Jim, your beloved family, your Jesuit communities and all who join in the ‘vigil of mystery’ –
I’ve been thinking that across time and space we keep vigil with you, Jim-James, and a web of companions. It was Jessica Powers, OCD who wrote:
“To live with the Spirit of God is to be a listener.
It is to keep the vigil of mystery, earthless and still.”
I hold you all in my heart and prayer. May your desire to be home for Christmas be fulfilled.
Blessings always,
Claudia, SND

Fr Jim, very often I recall the wonderful retreat in Emmaus, Greening Spirit: Mysticism of the Earth. If one day stands out, it would be Day 2, Our Meadow Experience, and especially your description of your meadow experience in PEI. You described the flat island, surrounded by sea, the farmland, the colours, blues and greens, the beaches, your garden and how it formed you.
You showed photos of your wonderful loving family. I now see in the updates how wonderful they are.
I am so happy that you have returned to your beloved Island to be with your loving family.
It’s a great gift to have met you, a gift that goes on giving, as occasionally I go through your hand-outs. Thank you so much. Wishing you and your family peace and joy and continuing prayers.
Eileen
